The Senior Class Council Application

Thanks for your interest in Class Councils!  The councils plan activities throughout the year for their entire class.  These events include planning social events, community service activities, fundraising, organizing class weeks such as Senior Week, career advising, working on the Class Gift selection and solicitation, and creating class identity and class community.

The Class Council members will be selected on their ability to represent and network with their class.  Your ability and willingness to communicate with different and varied groups of classmates will be important to your selection, as diversity within the council body will be a priority.  Although not exclusive, diverse elements we will look for will include: all undergraduate schools, different academic programs, gender, ethnicity, and different social communities such as campus activists, orientation leaders, library regulars, the Greek community, transfer students, the student-athlete community, etc.   In effect, the council will be expected to actively represent such groups by relaying relevant information to them, encouraging them to participate in events and programs, and by generally working to involve their individual communities in the greater community of their class.

There are important requirements for council members.  First, applicants must be in good academic standing in the class to whichever council he/she is applying.  Members are required to attend bi-weekly meetings in addition to committee meetings which may occur on a weekly basis as well. Members are also expected to come and support all council related activities, regardless of the sponsoring committee. It is important to realize that the meetings are not the only time commitments of council members. The majority of the work is done outside of formal meetings in the planning and implementation of events.

Further, members that will join the Senior Class Council will be required to work at the 2007 Senior Week event, May 11-19.  All members are encouraged and expected to attend a Class Council retreat in the fall of 2007 and winter 2008.  All council members are also required to solicit donations for their Class Gift, including asking close friends to donate.

COUNCIL POSITIONS:

The following positions are interviewed or elected council members who serve on the executive council:  President, Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Class Gift, Vice President for Class Identity, Vice President for Communications, Vice President for Development, and Class Editor.  The position descriptions below indicate the main functions of the officer, in addition to his/her role in leading a committee.  The president does not lead a committee but sits on the Alumni Affairs and Class Gift committee. The sub-positions and responsibilities of each committee indicate the tasks that are the basic functions of the committee.  The organization of these sub-positions and responsibilities should be determined by the committee each year, with the approval of the advisor.

Council members are given the opportunity at the beginning of the year to rank their committee choices.  Advisors will then create committees based on those preferences.  When committees are established, the committee chair will facilitate the process of determining who within each committee will fulfill each sub-position.  The committee will submit a report to the advisor of each member's responsibilities.

Following selection in the spring of their junior year, the senior class officers are responsible for all class affairs through the class's 5th reunion, at which time new elections are held.  Elected officers will serve on the 5th Reunion Class Council.
