2008 Senior Class Gift

Congratulations on making it to our final semester here at UVM! We are proud to announce that the Senior Class Council, based on your responses to the gift poll, has chosen the 2008 Senior Class Gift.

We are in the process of commissioning glass sculptor and UVM student, Ethan Bond-Watts, to create a hanging, blown-glass sculpture in the atrium above the Chikago Landing across from the Marketplace on the 2nd floor of the Davis Center. Ethan hopes to create a unique installation that would "increase the aesthetic appeal, symbolize our dedication to the arts and local community, and create a more inspiring and dynamic environment" on our campus.

The Senior Class Council will be holding a peer-to-peer solicitation, phone-a-thon, and other such fundraising efforts to help us reach our goal. We hope we can count on your support for the creation of this wonderful legacy in honor of our class!

About the Artist

Ethan Bond-Watts  received his foundation in glass through an apprenticeship with American glass master Alan Goldfarb in Burlington, VT.  There, Ethan assisted Goldfarb in the creation of his classical production lines and art vessels.  Developing quickly, Ethan soon worked his way up the studio ranks, and at 19-years-old was promoted to "Gaffer," given his own furnace, bench, and assistant in order to produce several lines of studio production glass.  In 2003, Ethan went on to create and sell his own classical production vessels, art glass objects, and assembled sculptures.

In winter 2005, Ethan made a pilgrimage to Murano, Venice, where he studied with Italian glass maestros including Alfredo Barbini, and Carlo "Caramea" Tosi, the last living decedent of the renowned Seguso bloodline of glass maestros.  In spring 2006, Ethan traveled to Seattle to study with some of America's foremost glass sculptors including Dante Marioni, Bertil Vallien, and Karen Willenbrink.  In addition to his travels, Ethan has studied at The Studio in Corning, NY where he developed classical Italian technique with maestro Elio Quarisa, sculpture with George Kennard, and surface design with Shinichi and Kimiaki Higuchi of Japan.

Ethan has shown his work and installations at solo exhibitions in Burlington, VT, St. Johnsbury, VT, and Boston, MA.  Ethan currently works out of his Burlington, VT studio where he creates limited production lines of classically inspired blown glass and assembled installation sculptures.
