Private giving to the University of Vermont is vital to the progress of our wonderful University in so many ways. It provides much-needed support for students in the form of undergraduate scholarships and graduate fellowships, enabling the University to compete with peer institutions for the best and the brightest. Support for faculty teaching and research enriches the academic environment and helps UVM to attract scholars of the highest caliber. Unrestricted gifts both large and small provide for investments that give the University of Vermont an extra margin of excellence in technology, facilities, academic programs, and student life. Gifts to endowment help to secure UVM's financial future in the form of investments whose income supports a wide range of vital programs and priorities.
During 2003-2004, total voluntary support of the University of Vermont amounted to $27,462,382, a very significant addition to our operating revenues without which the University could not hope to maintain the quality that drives our continuing success. Of particular note this past year was the $6,201,344 in contributions to the annual UVM Fund from a record 20,550 donors. And the ongoing Campaign for the University of Vermont continues to make strong headway, having passed the halfway point in the Campaign timeline on June 30, 2004, with sixty-four percent of the $250 million goal already committed. An updated look at Campaign progress is available online at www.uvm.edu/~campaign.
In short, it was another remarkable year of philanthropic support from the thousands of alumni, parents, friends, faculty and staff, corporations, foundations, and other organizations who believe in the University's mission and recognize its contributions to Vermont, the nation, and the world.
I offer my thanks on behalf of the University to each of you. With your continued support, we will keep Vermont's flagship university on its course to greatness.
Daniel Mark Fogel
President
