Seattle - Saturday, May 6, 2006
Seattle UVMers volunteered for the second year in a row with the Lettuce Link program at Marra Farm, 4 acres of historic preserved farmland tucked into the South Park neighborhood of Seattle. This organization provides fresh organic produce to emergency food programs. In 2005, the farm produced over 20,000 pounds of organic produce; 29 at-risk youth participated in an employment training program; 100 children from nearby Concord Elementary School participated in hands-on gardening and nutrition education; and 25 neighbors gardened at the community P-Patch. Produce was distributed to local food bank clients, residents, Mien community members, and Concord students and their families. Seattle Youth Garden Works sold produce at the Columbia City Farmer's Market and through a Community Supported Agriculture Program (CSA).
