UVM Chemist Wins Cottrell Award (up^)
Rory Waterman, assistant professor of chemistry at the University of Vermont, has been selected as a 2009 Cottrell Scholar by the Research Corporation for Science Advancement. Waterman will receive a $100,000 research award in recognition of his leadership in both teaching and scholarship. Waterman's award praised his plan to establish a computerized network of research opportunities for Vermont high school and University of Vermont undergraduate students and his development of a research-based course for first-year students. Cottrell Awards are made each year to ten beginning faculty members at leading U.S. universities in astronomy, biochemistry, biophysics, chemistry, or physics. Waterman is also a 2009 recipient of a research award by the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, one of the nation's most prestigious prizes for outstanding early career scientists. Waterman's experiments in catalytic bond formation of elements, like finding new ways to create bonds in phosphorous, have been at the forefront of an important area of basic chemistry research. His work promises to be of great value in fields ranging from drug delivery to LED lights. More at http://www.uvm.edu/~uvmpr/?Page=News&storyID=14421.

Free Wheeling (up^)
Thirty-eight Vermont children with disabilities and their families came to the O'Brien Community Center in Winooski, Vt., on May 16 to be fitted for specially adapted tricycles that enable them to ride independently for the first time. The event was sponsored by the Vermont chapter of AMBUCS, a national organization that promotes mobility and independence for people with disabilities; a group of local pediatric physical and occupational therapists; and UVM's Center on Disability and Community Inclusion (CDCI). In this audio slideshow, listen to CDCI faculty member and Vermont AMBUCS chapter co-founder Marie MacLeod talk about the program's impact on Vermont families and children. http://www.uvm.edu/~uvmpr/?Page=News&storyID=14451

UVM Takes Fifth Straight America East Academic Cup (up^)
The University of Vermont has been awarded the America East Academic Cup for an unprecedented fifth consecutive year. UVM student-athletes achieved a 3.14 cumulative grade-point average during the 2008-09 year. It ties the highest grade-point average in the 14-year history of the award, which the Catamounts set during the 2004-05, 2005-06 and 2007-08 academic years. Vermont is the only school in America East to have won the Academic Cup five straight years (2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009) and has a total of six Academic Cups after winning the inaugural award in 1996. "We are very proud of the manner in which UVM student-athletes conduct themselves as competitors, as citizens of our community, and as scholars. They continue to demonstrate the highest ideals of intercollegiate athletics and are to be congratulated for another exceptional year in the classroom, and on the field of play," said Dr. Robert Corran, UVM's Associate Vice President and Director of Athletics. Lacrosse Star Named America East Woman of the Year (up^)
UVM Lacrosse star Kristen Millar has been named America East Woman of the Year. Millar, who graduated in May of 2009, left the university knowing she did one thing better than anyone else in the history of women's college lacrosse: beat her opponent to the ball and gain possession during a draw (the equivalent of the face-off in hockey). This specialized, somewhat arcane accomplishment belies the well-rounded life of the elementary education major from Whitby, Ontario. The award puts Millar in the running for the NCAA's national award and recognizes the conference's senior female student-athlete who has distinguished herself in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership. Smith placed second in an 18-hole local qualifying event at Staley Farms Golf Club in Kansas City, Mo. on May 20 and then placed in the top-10 at the sectional qualifier at Westmoreland Country Club in Wilmette, Ill. Smith was two-over par for the 36-hole event, but made the qualifying standard to earn entry into the most prestigious event in women's golf. The 2009 Women's U.S. Open will be held July 9-12 on The Old Course at Saucon Valley Country Club in Bethlehem, Pa. Smith will be one of 156 golfers to compete for the U.S. Open title.
