Fall 2009 Exhibitions at the Fleming Museum

Elizabeth Billings: The Ties That Bind - May 26-October 4, 2009
Bennington, VT-based artist Elizabeth Billings combines the traditional method of ikat weaving - a style of weaving that uses a resist dyeing process on either the warp or weft before the threads are woven to create a pattern or design - with embroidered text drawn from the diary of Harriet Warren Vail of Pomfret, Vermont. Vail wrote one line each day, marking changes in daily activity from 1850-1865. In Malay language, the word ikat suggests "to tie" or "to bind" - thus, together the weaving and the words of a nineteenth-century Vermonter suggest the threads that connect or bind different generations together.
Egyptomania: September 22-December 18, 2009
"Egyptomania" specifically refers to a renewed interest in Egypt by the West during the nineteenth century as a result of Napoleon's Egyptian Campaign (1798-1801), and the extensive scientific study of ancient Egyptian remains and culture evidenced in the Description de l'Egypte. In addition to its aesthetic impact on literature, art, and architecture, Egyptomania also played a role in discourse and imaginings about race, gender, and national identity.
Since the early nineteenth century, the fascination with ancient Egypt seems to have affected every field of American culture. Some of the most important areas of culture influenced by Egyptomania are literature, architecture, art, film, politics and religion. Egyptian images and symbols also served for more trivial purposes, such as dessert services, furniture, decoration, commercial kitsch, and even advertising. This exhibition brings together a rich array of items, all of which explore the fascination with Egyptian culture.

"Dr. Gross is the founder of the Vermont Mathematics Initiative (VMI), a partnership of University of Vermont and the Vermont State Department of Education. Begun in 1999, the VMI is a comprehensive, statewide, master’s degree granting mathematics professional development program for elementary and middle school teachers. The ultimate mission of the VMI is to improve the teaching of mathematics across Vermont and raise student achievement. To date, VMI has reached 575 teachers, representing roughly 50% of the elementary and middle schools in Vermont and 90% of the school districts. Through these teachers VMI has an impact on the learning of over 10,000 Vermont students annually. Formal program evaluation, begun in 2004, has shown that the VMI has had a major impact on the teachers themselves, their classroom practice, and, most importantly, students in schools with VMI teachers.
This presentation will review the importance of mathematics instruction and student learning at the elementary level, outline key ingredients in the success of the VMI including the use of English language grammar in learning mathematics; describe lessons learned over the past ten years; and provide ample time for questions and discussion. The presentation is designed for a general audience and has no mathematics or education prerequisites."

Economics of Stereotyping
Davis Center - Livak Ballroom
Accurate information on individuals, not stereotypes about the groups they are part of, is necessary when employers make wage and hiring decisions. But there is abundant evidence that many employers subscribe to the same gender and race stereotypes as most of the U.S. population. Why do some employers believe group stereotypes (often acting on them when hiring) when they would do much better to gather and use information on individuals?
This lecture concerns the economics and psychology of imperfect information in labor markets. We will consider characteristics such as "commitment," "work ethic," "motivation," and "drive" that are important to employers, hard to evaluate, and strongly linked to stereotypes, and will put this problem in the historical context of American race and gender relations.
Lecture followed by a reception at 4:00 pm in the Davis Center's White Pine Lounge.

Tzeddakah boxes are highly ornamental boxes for the collection of coins intended for what is commonly translated as "charity" but is more accurately translated as "gifts of justice." Tzedakkah suggests the idea that we need to redistribute what we have in order to create a more just society. Refreshments will be served in the UVM Hillel Sukkah, adjacent to the Allen House. This event is free.

Soul Food Social
Dudley H. Davis Center - 4th Floor
The Soul Food Social, a signature event of the Black Student Union, is an opportunity for students, faculty, staff, and friends to enjoy good quality food, fun, entertainment, and fellowship.
Founded in part around the hit movie, Soul Food, the social provides the opportunity to connect/reconnect around a home-cooked meal that many of the students miss while in college.
Since the Black Student Union is a club organization, it relies solely on donations to make this free event possible; your contributions will help BSU continue this amazing tradition.
Black Student Union is an organization established at UVM for students, faculty, and staff of color and their allies. It works to facilitate culture and socially-conscious events within the UVM community. It is directly tied to the ALANA (African American, Latino/a, Asian, Native American) community, as well as with other organizations and clubs on campus.
