Voices of Vermont at Reunion: Whit Wagner '78: "Life Does Not Travel in a Straight Line, Nor Do Markets"
Davis Center Livak Ballroom
The last twelve months have brought changes to the financial markets not seen since the 1930s. Nearly all asset classes – stocks, bonds, real estate – have experienced sharp declines, leaving many individuals and families with less than half of the wealth they enjoyed a year ago. Turbulent times call for thoughtful planning and a consistent strategy. Whit Wagner ’78, President and CEO of Clear Brook Advisors, will offer his perspective on the current state of the financial markets. Tune out the cable news shows and come by for a dose of good, old fashioned New England common sense to investing.

Davis Center Livak Ballroom
Investigating the tree of human evolution - including the pelvic structure of the hominid Lucy, whose remains were found in Ethiopia in 1974 - may explain the etiology of many current health problems. The human pelvis evolved from early mammals and many forces have impacted its form. Chief among these is the transition from walking on four limbs to upright bipedal ambulation. We will examine the role of these forces on human anatomy and try to answer these questions: “Why does my back hurt? Why do sprinters run so fast? Why do my feet hurt? Why do humans deliver babies with attendants? Why do humans have C-sections? Why do women in underserved areas suffer from birth trauma such as fistula?” and more.

Voices of Vermont at Reunion: Eric Lipton ’87
“Inside the Meltdown"
Billings North Lounge
Eric Lipton, a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter in the Washington bureau of The New York Times and a 1987 graduate of UVM, has covered everything from the World Trade Center attack to Hurricane Katrina. But for the last six months, it has been a different kind of disaster: the Great Recession of 2009. He takes us inside the frantic government effort to bailout the economy, offering a view from inside Treasury and the FDIC as they scramble to save banks and prop up the auto industry. His stories have focused, in part, on the business executives that have figured out a way to profit from the misery. It is the story of capitalism: they are always winners and losers. The question is, will the bailout work.
