In April, Irving and Lily Lisman and the thirty recipients of this year’s Irving Lisman Scholarship Fund enjoyed a luncheon in the Waterman Building’s Coolidge Room. I received notice of the death of our classmates Fletcher Joslyn, Hilda Davis Sturdevant, and Dorothy Simpson Burbank. The class of 1934 sends our sympathy to their families. I have a new great-granddaughter named Isabelle born to Martha Hauke Bloom ’93 and her husband, Matt. I now have 21 great-grandchildren. My life is not too eventful, but I have reached the age of 95, and on September 14 I will be 96.

Lynn Williams Jones ’72 wrote, “It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of my dad, John Williams, on March 30, 2007, at the age of 91 (almost 92). He died peacefully at home with family and friends at his bedside. He had long been an avid fan of UVM and a long time supporter. His heart was broken when his wife, Inez, my mom, died nearly two years ago. His brain was in great shape, but his body failed him.”

Elinor Sullivan Adams wrote that she wishes the news of the world were more auspicious. On a cheerful note, she reports that she has four great-grandchildren and 10 grandchildren. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to Dorothy and Merriman Hull on the death of their son, Dennis, on January 1, 2007.

Because the class of ’41 was a co-sponsor of the James Marsh Lecture given by the renowned Elie Wiesel on April 25 in Patrick Gym, our president Carole Stetson Spaulding and six classmates were given special seating in the huge audience. Dr. Jack Bloom, who passed away on October 17, 2006, worked tirelessly for many years to promote our 50th reunion gift to help fund the James Marsh Lecture Series as part of UVM’s graduate program in Higher Education Student Affairs. He thought the lectures should focus on “cooperation, a discipline essential to preserving the integrity of society.” In 2005, his efforts resulted in partial funding of Bishop Desmond Tutu’s lecture on “Race Relations and World Peace.” Despite Jack’s busy practice in his long career in the field of periodontal diseases and his teaching at several universities, he was dedicated to the future of UVM. His wife of 63 years, Eleanor Berig Bloom ’43, lives in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts. Eleanor Miller, dean of UVM’s College of Arts and Sciences, announced the appointment of Oletha Thompson Bickford to the college’s advisory board.

Theresa Coderre Trahan wrote that she recently sold her home in Hoosick Falls, New York, and she is living in a retirement center in Bennington, Vermont. Terry had a large family of five children. She reported that all are happily married, but unfortunately not all are living nearby. Elmer Travers retired from his job as a meteorologist in charge of the National Weather Service Station at Bridgeport, Connecticut, in 1973. His hobbies include antique cars and music. Wanda Bevins Dudley lives in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is retired from the University of New Mexico. Wanda’s activities include volunteering at the library twice a week, bowling in two leagues, and serving as recording secretary in Beta Sigma Phi. She is also a 50-year member of the DAR as well as an active member in the Eastern Star, the Mayflower Society, Daughters of the Nile, and the Jamestown Society. Palla Stickney Hazen wrote that five of her eight children are graduates of UVM. Paula has 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. We received a newspaper clipping with a picture of Florence Bevins Melick and husband George on the occasion of their 60th wedding anniversary. They both look absolutely fabulous. Florence retired as a state nutrition consultant for the Department of Health, Trenton, New Jersey, in 1986. She was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army Medical Corps, serving in Europe and Japan during World War II. Florence is also a member of the American Dietetic Association and U.S. Masters Swimming. The Melicks have four children and six grandchildren. It was good to hear from Mildred Mack Andrews, who lives in Advance, North Carolina. Mildred is another busy lady. She volunteers at a nearby hospital, enjoys duplicate bridge, takes exercise classes, and plays in Shuffleboard Tournaments. She and her husband, Al, enjoy symphony, opera, and ballet performances. She is also active in her church. Margaret Charles Lang reported that she is president of the Fred Lang Foundation, the mission of which is to raise money to help pay for mental health services for indigent members of her community. Finally, Claire LaFray Rollo sent me some news. First, the good news: Ruth Newell is well and happy. I remember Ruth as a Tri Delt sister, so I was very pleased to get this bit of news. On a sad note, we have lost two of our classmates, Morna Lang Johnston and Dottie Bullard Stewart, both Claire’s Alpha Chi Omega sorority sisters. We extend our sincere sympathy to their families and to Claire who has lost two friends. If you wish to contact Claire, she can be reached via email at clafray978@ aol.com.

David Harlow devoted many years to his job at the Vermont Division of Vocational Rehabilitation. He is now retired in Ludlow, Vermont, and he reported that a grandson graduated from UVM a year ago and a granddaughter graduated last spring. Another granddaughter began her junior year at UVM this fall. All three are native Vermonters. In the fall of 1944, Dave was one of the 69 men entering UVM in the freshman class. The women numbered 254, and news of four of them is included in this report. The grand total in the original class of ’48 was 323, and our current roster lists 253 class members. Mildred Norrie Williams of Lake Placid, New York, garnered well-earned plaudits upon her retirement after 40 years as administrative assistant at the local nursing home. Ruth Esser Strong of Craftsury Common, Vermont, is enjoying her three sons and two daughters and their families. They have been drawn even closer by the loss of Marine Sergeant Jesse Strong, who was cited by Anderson Cooper in a CNN news story. Perry and Eschol Pixley Goodell received the Citizen of the Year Award in 2006 at the annual meeting of the Littleton, New Hampshire, Chamber of Commerce held at the Mount Washington Hotel. Jane Robbins King wrote that she is delighted with the number of UVM graduates in her local Alpha Chi Omega chapter in Boca Raton, Florida.
