Doris Jones Fafunwa, who lives in Nigeria, wrote that when she visited Vermont last summer she fractured a hip. Back home in Nigeria, their Child Life-Line children's project finally has a beautiful new administration building. They are fortunate to have received funding for a vocational workshop on the residential premises. The hard part is finding the wherewithal for the day-to-day children's maintenance. Many donors like to see specific results. The Nigerwives Braille Book Production Centre continues to produce textbooks in Braille for both secondary and primary pupils. Collecting high quality used paper, as in calendars and company reports (which is then used to Braille the books) is an ongoing task. Rita Karp Coleman is working full-time as an art therapist in a psychiatric hospital in Rye, New York. She writes that she loves returning to UVM every so often, misses the Dairy Bar, and has lots of good memories of her UVM days. Lillian Cotnoir Doyle wrote from Amarillo, Texas: "I am retired since 2005 and I am widowed. I stay active in Great Books and my church group. I taught Latin, French, Spanish, and English at the high school level. My house in Amarillo is open to UVM alumni passing through the Panhandle of Texas, on the way to the ski slopes (off I-40 W, two blocks)." Leonard Tomat spent the month of January in Pasadena, California. His son, Andrew, is employed by Teradyne and lives in Redondo Beach. Weekends were filled with theatre, the opera, concerts and eating out. Jane Capizzi of Corvallis, Oregon, represented UVM at the inauguration of Portland State University's new President on May 1. Lastly, Francis Sheridan writes that he is already looking forward to our 60th Reunion next year!

Suzanne Clark Richardson Daniels writes from White River Junction that she has recently been elected to the board of the Vermont Covered Bridge Society as membership chair. Two years ago she married the treasurer of the society, Neil Daniels, of Wethersfield, Vermont. It fits in with her life since she had purchased the 1790 Cape style building on the banks of the Connecticut River that was the toll house for the Windsor, Vermont, and Cornish, New Hampshire, covered bridges. She hopes to create an accessible facility in the toll house for all to learn about the states' covered bridges. Word has come that Donald Carroll Brown '52 passed away on February 15, 2009 in the Villages of Lady Lakes, Florida. Donald was an Army Veteran, a teacher, and, until his retirement, in Government Services in Washington, D.C. He moved to the Villages in 1991. He leaves his wife Ellen and two sons. Duane Graveline wrote "After a busy career I want to share some of the high points that my education at UVM made possible. Despite the misgivings of my medical school dean then, after graduating from medical school in 1955, I joined the US Air Force for the next ten years as flight surgeon and research scientist in space medicine. There were also several stints with NASA, culminating in my selection in 1965 as one of NASA's six scientist astronauts. Twenty-three years of family practice in Vermont followed, fourteen of them spent as flight surgeon with the Vermont National Guard's helicopter group. The military has truly been the spice of my life. Associated with my annual astronaut physicals at Johnson Space Center in 1999, I was to experience a strange amnesia associated with the statin drug, Lipitor. When this recurred the following year at my NASA physical I knew there was a serious cognitive problem with this drug, then unknown to our physicians. I came out of retirement at that time to research this well-kept secret to write my Lipitor, Thief of Memory book. My second book, Statin Drugs Side Effects, followed when I knew the side effects of statin drugs for some were far more than cognitive and associated with all statins, not just Lipitor. Now, having found that statins actually damage our DNA, explaining why our neuropathies and myopathies are permanent in many cases, I wrote my just published third book, Statin Damage Crisis. All are on Amazon. And in between times I managed to design and perform an experiment at NASA's linear accelerator at Brookhaven to study our next challenge to space flight, galactic cosmic radiation, while consulting at Kennedy Space Center near my home. Thought you folks at UVM might like to know this. Enjoy my website at www.spacedoc.net." I want to thank those loyal alumni who sent me news. Keep it coming.

Gordon Downe is trying to locate former classmate/roommate Robert Lee Grayson. Gordon's email is gordondowne@windstream.net. His telephone is 828-859-2103 and snail mail: 201 East Howard St., Apt. A3, Tryon, NC 28782. Beverly Thorpe Remick, who has retired from her job in UVM Extension, still lives in Shelburne with a backyard that attracts lots of wildlife that is fun to watch, including deer that dig in the snow for food and nibble her shrubs and bushes. Bev has been taking enjoyable trips southward during the winter months, including nine days in Sarasota, Florida, in January. As of this writing, Bev was looking forward to an Easter visit with her son Bruce '78 and his wife Kathy Jackson Remick '76 in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia.

Phyllis Cameron Bricker returned to California in April from a three-week holiday in Rome and the Amalfi Coast including Sorrento, Positano, the Isle of Capri, and Ravello. The ruins of Pompeii, the Archeological Museum in Naples and the Greek temples were among the highlights. She was accompanied by her son, Dr. Jonathan Bricker, an independent researcher at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle. Their trip included a visit to the American World War II Memorial Cemetery where her brother lost his life during the Anzio beachhead invasion. They found Italians friendly and helpful. Other recent travels have taken her to Chile, Torres del Paine, Cape Horn, Antarctica, and Argentina. She looks forward to visiting the African continent again in the future. Correction: Her book, Girl Cane and Other Short Stories, was published by Rosedog, not Rosedale books as previously reported. This book is available on Yahoo and Amazon.com.

Joanne Blakeman writes "My husband, Alan, and I enjoyed a reunion last fall with several of my UVM friends and their spouses. This has become an annual gathering and renewal of friendships that date back to our freshman year at Adsit House in September 1951." Carolyn Silsby reports that she has enjoyed traveling, most recently in Slovenia, Croatia, and Montenegro. Madlyn Cook lives in Florida five months out of the year (November- April). She would love to hear from anyone that lives in Florida and says that her home address is the same as always. William Oldman completed forty years of part-time service with the Seattle Supersonics NBA basketball team in 2008, serving thirty-five years as the official scorer for the team.

Bruce Hauser has sent along the following information "Time is moving along very quickly for all of us as we remain very active trying to accomplish our daily priority lists. In addition to living on Cape Cod for the past eighteen-plus years since retirement from the Grumman Corporation (Aerospace). Olga, Wheaton College '56, and I have been challenged in the training of a young Fell Pony (endangered breed) to drive both our carriages and sleigh (a fifty-year hobby). We continue to summer on Monhegan Island, Maine after forty-four years, do some traveling (the last being to China during November) and enjoy being part of our two children's and four grandchildren's lives. The latter two are in college (College of Charleston and Syracuse University). Unfortunately, no UVM'ers yet! We miss Carolyn Craig Williams, who used to live close to us, and try to keep up with a few classmates. Would love to hear from more!" Some may be interested to know of the tragic equestrian accidental death of Elizabeth Whitcomb Brown Lampton '55.  Since then, her husband, Dinwiddie Lampton '55, died on September 25, 2008. They were both very highly recognized achievers in the equine driving world and lived in Lexington, Kentucky. It won't be long before another Reunion is upon us!

Julie (Brown) and Bob Dempsey along with Bill Keeshan and his wife, Bunny, had a fabulous trip to Montana in September of 2008. They visited Kay (Fernald) and Bill Beebe who have retired to Bozeman, a marvelously scenic part of Montana. It must have been a wonderful mini-reunion! Don Klein wrote that he is still teaching microbiology at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, still married (fifty-three years to first wife, Sandra), and still enjoying life! Kids are here and there as usual. A daughter recently moved to Peacham, Vermont, with her family, so Don and his wife have an excuse to visit New England. A summer/rental home on Megansett Harbor, North Falmouth, Massachusetts keeps them busy and gives an opportunity to enjoy the salt water on Buzzard's Bay. Their little house on French Hill in Wiliston, Vermont, sold in 1961, is still there and fun to drive by. Don was sorry to hear about the passing of Bob "Stretch" Richardson, a good friend from Acacia. Eileen Deacon Hartke '59 sent word that her husband of over fifty years, George William Hartke III, passed away December 6, 2008. Bill was a Phi Delt and his wife said that we will remember his Elvis impression during Penny Carnival at Kake Walk! Bill had been a food technologist and consultant for various companies throughout his career. Keep the news flowing! See how great it is to hear from '57 classmates!

Tom Eggert of Lake View, New York, reports that he was instrumental in getting Jimmy Sacca inducted on October 9, 2008, into the Buffalo Music Hall of Fame after lobbying five years for this recognition. Jimmy Sacca was the lead singer of the Hilltoppers who, according to Billboard, were ranked first and second vocal group in 1952, '53, and '54, with such hit songs as "Trying," "P.S. I Love You," and "Till Then."

Your Class Secretary, Carol Suhr Gater, cpadams02@snet.net, and Class VP, Steve Berry, SteveBerry@rcn.com, are eager to hear from '61 members with news to share with classmates.  Here are some of the items that we have recently received. Peter Lorman is still practicing Orthopedic Surgery in a six-man group in Southern California. He is enjoying good health and keeps in contact with Steven Grossman, Carol Nagelsmith Greenberg '62, and Bryna Cohen Alper '60. He plans on attending the 50th reunion (it's only two years away) and hope to see lots of old friends there. George Gunn says "Not much has changed for the Gunns. We did buy another home in Scottsdale, Arizona, last fall and after five months of interior renovations, moved into it on March 21. Carol Lee and I (and our two cats) still split our time with seven months in Arizona (mid-October through mid-May) and five months in Stowe, Vermont (mid-May thru mid-October). I am retired but still work part time directing two major projects for my employer of 36 years, CH2MHILL. I play golf two to three days a week and work around the house. Carol is a docent at the Heard Museum in Phoenix and heavily involved in other museum activities such as its annual Indian Market Fair and Guild. After five months of working on the new Arizona home, we are looking forward to returning to Vermont for a little r & r. We try to take one major trip a year. Last fall we went to Spain for eleven days and checked out Madrid, Barcelona, & Majorca. Not sure where we will head this year. When we get to Vermont we do see some UVMers which we greatly enjoy." Jamie Jacobs reports "Jean (Pillsbury '62) and I took a great trip to Turkey in the fall. We stayed at home (Lexington, Kentucky) for the holidays to be with our two boys and grandchildren, and then spent much of January and February at our place in Utah skiing. This year so far, I've hunted quail and pheasant in Georgia, quail in Western Kentucky and just returned from a dove shoot in Argentina (Cordoba), where I also fished for golden dorado on the Uruguay River. I will meet seven of my fraternity  brothers (class of '61 will be well represented) for our annual golf outing in Ocean City, Maryland, in early May right after a local wild turkey hunt at our "hunt farm" and a steelhead fishing trip to northern Ohio (Jean is an accomplished fly fishing gal, by the way).  I've been retired two years now–it's been great. Jean and I extend our best wishes to all our classmates and UVM friends." Linda Sack Fossier and her husband Mike spent the winter in Newport Beach, California, and are so happy to have escaped the bad winter in the Boston area. They still live in Winchester, Massachusetts, part of the year, and have a total of thirteen grandchildren. She is a semi-retired real estate appraiser. Jan Mashman '61 MD '65 is still in the practice of neurology in Danbury, Connecticut. "Susan and I have a house on Dewees Island, South Carolina, off Charleston. Life is complex but interesting and we are looking forward to our 50th anniversary in August."

Hello classmates! I haven't heard from you in quite awhile. I am sure that you are enjoying life whether at work or at play so why not contact me so that our class may share in your news? I've had an active ski season this year in Vermont, Colorado, and Sun Valley, Idaho! Now all my thoughts have turned to golf. How about you? I'm also upgrading two rooms in my home on the Navesink River. As I was selecting lighting for one of the rooms, I met a lovely woman and her daughter who were in the process of making a decision about her college choice. One of her choices was UVM and I enthusiastically participated in several conversations with mom as well as shared some of my wonderful UVM table top editions. Needless to say, once they visited the campus this spring and participated in the events prepared for the potential freshman class, daughter and mom were pleased to tell me that UVM was the college of choice. I can't take credit for the UVM presentation, yet I believe that my enthusiasm for UVM and our wonderful experiences during our four years there did make enough of an impact on mom and daughter for them to consider the visit. Now–how about some enthusiasm for our class? Let's hear from you! Please send me news of your whereabouts as soon as possible in order to have your news shared with your classmates in the fall issue of VQ.

Hi everyone. By now our 45th reunion is just a happy memory. If you missed the 45th, start now to plan for our 50th.  Ed Healy and his wife were walking the beach in Treasure Island, Florida when they met his former UVM math professor, Heath Riggs, and his wife. Ed sends regards to all of you. I very rarely hear from anyone these days. I would hope more of you would share your news. It is nice to have lots to write about. Hopefully our Reunion will have given me lots of news for the Fall VQ Issue. Enjoy your summer. We will be on the banks of Lake Champlain enjoying our summer in West Addison. If you are in the neighborhood, stop by: 30 Broadview Lane. Please keep in touch.

Nostalgia, reflection and stunned disbelief at the passage of time seem to be the themes for those of us from the Class of 1965. As Dick Brandon noted, "Seems impossible (since) the four great years at UVM are as vivid as if they were yesterday." Dick recently retired from Bank of America after forty-two years. He is now working part-time on the staff of Rhode Island Mentoring Partnership, fundraising and recruiting mentors for "at risk" children. He and wife, Alana, have lived in Barrington, Rhode Island for thirty-two years, and have two married children, Jill Greene of Essex, Massachusetts, and son Jamie (married to Michelle Armentano '02) of South Burlington, VT–Eugene Weiss has been with the pharmaceutical company Pfizer for thiry-two years, presently working in the firm's post-marketing surveillance safety operation.  He and his wife of thirty-three years, Susan, have two daughters, Wendy and Melissa, and one granddaughter. Dave Thomas retired from IBM after a forty-year career in accounting and finance management and systems analysis. He and wife, Frances Fortier '66, have lived in Richmond, Vermont, for thirty-five years, where they remain active in town affairs and church and community organizations. Their three children graduated from Ithaca College, Boston College, and Williams, and now Dave and Fran enjoy traveling and outdoor activities. Sounds like Barbara Isham Dobay has the right idea. She spends six months of the year in New Haven, Connecticut, and six months in Sweden. Barbara Grimes Staats of Morristown, New Jersey was married in 1996 and is now enjoying retired life, living close to New York City, playing golf, and traveling. Maria McCaffrey is still working as a veterinarian and raising shire draft horses. Jean Martinson Davio shared this "After the passing of my husband, I sold our house in upstate New York and moved to The Villages, Florida, where it is always a beautiful day." Seems like a little new perspective might enliven our class notes, so if anyone is willing to take over writing, please contact me. There must be some old English major out there willing to give it a try!

Anthony Rishe, who played on the UVM hockey team with James Klode, Chip Uihlein, Jim Brock and many others, has recently retired from management at three large corporations over his work career. Tony was recently remarried in September of 2008, and as a result has a wonderful new wife, two stepdaughters and a stepson. Tony's stepchildren are in high school and active in several sports, where they play on winning teams. His own children have graduated and are taking on terrific careers as adults. Since his formal retirement, Tony has founded a new corporation with an expertise in remodeling homes, gardens and commercial build-outs. (Whatever happened to retirement?) His company focus is on "high quality" and unique upgrades, using only the best products and catering to the desires of his clients. You can reach Anthony at golfish@gmail.com. Tony is hoping to see more input from his classmates in the Vermont Quarterly as the years go by. Claudia Serwer and Anne Brown '66 flew to Florida for a UVM AEPhi Reunion of sisters from the classes of 1964 through 1967 at the home of Alice Ostrove Miller '66. Most of the women who attended either lived in the Miami area or had second homes there, but some flew south for the event. It was Claudia's second time attending and Anne's first. The group started out small but grew to 14 people this year and was a lot of fun.

"Kish" Swift wrote to advise classmates that, following the Class of '68 Reunion and an impressive bike ride last June, ADP sisters Kathy Christie Giebutowski, Debbie Chambers and Kish Dalton Swift met with Sandy Snowling Wiggins '67 in southern New Hampshire for a memorable luncheon. In October, Kish (who lives in Fishers, Indiana) and Peg Lombardo, Mibs Taylor Bush, and Sue Gibbons '67 met in San Diego for an amazing weekend of catching up, visiting the pandas at the zoo, and enjoying harbor watercraft, splendid sunsets in La Jolla, Mexican cuisine, toasts to friendships of over forty years, and sisterly fellowship. Wow, what a fun-packed two days! Kish is currently working to earn her private pilot's license! Class of '68, please keep that news coming.
