CLASS NOTES
1934
I wanted to let everyone know about the birth of our 22nd great-grandchild, Isabel Grace, on September 8. Her mother is my granddaughter, Martha Hauke (’93) Bloom. On September 14, I celebrated my 95th birthday with my family and at another gathering at the Church of St. James in Essex Junction. I feel blessed to be able to go to church and family gatherings, and I feel especially blessed with numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, many of whom live near me in Burlington and close by in New Jersey and New Hampshire.

Jean Fuller Hallgarth has moved to Tucson, Ariz. She wrote, “I used to wonder how my late sister Evelyn Fuller (’41) Lance could live in Arizona. Now, I am so well acclimated to that climate, temperatures in the low 80s seem downright chilly.” Jean’s interests at UVM included geology, the Glee Club, Double Quartet, and the choir. Neil Bartlett wrote from Tucson, Ariz., with the sad news that his grandson, Daniel, died. The mathematics department where Daniel taught established the Daniel Bartlett Memorial Fund to bring a mathematics scholar from somewhere in the world to Tucson to deliver the Daniel Bartlett Memorial Lecture.

Jack Berkowitz, who lives in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., continues his career in real estate. His granddaughter, a sixth grade teacher whose husband is a medical intern, lives in Palo Alto, Calif. Elinor Sullivan Adams thinks that Tom Friedman’s The World is Flat provides an understanding of the bewildering global developments continually unfolding before us. Aloe Celia enjoys living in Spring Hill, Fla. She keeps in touch with Francis Nye and Muriel Hutchinson (’38) Brainerd. Flossie Wade Eaton, Heath Riggs, and your secretary represented our class at Reunion 2006. I was delighted to receive a call from Dorothy and Merriman Hull recently. Jean Butler Pye recently visited her son in Florida. She lives in a senior citizen retirement community in Charlotte, N.C., where she enjoys a variety of activities. Jean Brehmer Swain died on March 18, 2006. She is best remembered for her love of literature and talent for creative writing. Veleida Fleming Reed sent best wishes to members of the class of 1940. Heath Riggs and his wife, Harriet, plan to spend the winter on Treasure Island on the west coast of Florida. They have enjoyed beach life there for several years. I enjoyed a conversation with Shirley Sizer-Baker, who lives in White Horse Village, a continuing care facility in Newtown Square, Pa. She recently attended a family reunion in Savannah, Ga. Florence Wade Eaton continues to enjoy living at The Pines, a housing facility in South Burlington, Vt. Your class secretary participated in a tour of Vermont’s historic sites, sponsored by the Vermont Historical Society last September. Martha Shakespeare Round retired as secretary to the Home Demonstration and 4-H Extension Service in Rutland County, Vt. Lucien Paquette has 23 grandchildren, probably a record in our class. He delights in gardening and participating in Addison County Field Days. Hand mowing with a scythe in the over-80 age group is his claim to fame. Elizabeth “Betsy” Marlow Komline reported on the lively activities at Fellowship Village in Basking Ridge, N.J. As of this writing, she is planning a trip to Maine. Dorothy Hull reported that she and Merriman Hull are in good health. They recently returned from a visit to Maryland, and, as always, they are enjoying their grandchildren.

Carole Stetson Spaulding represented our class at the UVM Homecoming and Family Weekend Scholarship Luncheon during which letters from the three recipients of the $3,000 scholarship funds donated this year by our class were read. Carole hopes that classmates will continue to respond generously when called by our Green & Gold Committee for scholarship donations. Soon after our 65th reunion, Olga Kish Johnston of New Port Richey, Fla., requested news about the event, which poor health prevented her from attending.

Barbara Morgan Adams wrote that after many years as “transplanted Vermonters” in Pennsylvania, she and her husband are happily settled in South Ryegate, Vt. In July, she and her family hosted the annual meeting of “Flagon and Trencher,” the association of descendants of Colonial Tavern Keepers, held at Longfellow’s Wayside Inn in Sudbury, Mass. Her husband, Kirt, is a direct descendant of the original owner, John Howe. Peggy Miller Logan recently welcomed her second great-grandson. He lives nearby, and her first great-grandson lives just next door, so they can all watch “Sponge Bob” together. Betty Newcomb Crabtree had an attack of pancreatitis, much like President Fogel. She, too, spent 11 days in the hospital and will have a long recovery period.

Please note a changing of the guard. After many years serving as our class scribe, regretfully Theresa Guzowski Johnson has stepped down. Many thanks to her for a job well done! I have left the Green and Gold planning committee to become the new class scribe, leaving classmates George Cunavelis, Ruth Haigh Mackenzie, June Felix Mona, Connie Virgona Alberghini, and Torrey Carpenter to carry on. Two of our granddaughters are in their first year at UVM, one is a Vermonter, and one is from California. Are there other classmates who can equal or top this score? Written correspondence or e-mails with your news are welcome. Please write “UVM notes” in the subject line.
