Alyssa Vine '04When Alyssa Vine graduated from UVM in May 2004, she spent her last summer in Burlington starting her job search. In the beginning, things did not go well. Alyssa discovered the frustrations of searching for entry level media and communications jobs in New York City. As she recalls, "I found out quickly that jobs posted on the Internet are often, at least for recent graduates, black holes for resumes with similar experience, education and objectives." After getting fed up with the dead-ends and being unsure where to find new job leads, Alyssa took the advice of an advisor in Career Services and logged on to the alumni career network, Career Connection. She started emailing alumni who had posted their contact information and had jobs that intrigued her. Alyssa introduced herself as a recent graduate, let the alumni know she found them on the Career Connection, and asked whether they would be willing to speak with her, over the phone or in person, to discuss their industry and career path.

'97 Grad Helped Design Target Rx Bottle

Deborah Adler ’97 sometimes wears red shoes. When in Burlington, she prefers the spinach melt to the turkey-apple-smoked-gouda at the Red Onion. For her design school thesis, she redesigned the amber prescription pill bottle, creating a better, safer system adopted by Target and exhibited in New York’s Museum of Modern Art. Libby Smith '02 on the LPGA Tour

In professional golf, one shot could make or end a career. For a veteran, there’s at least the security of knowing redemption could be only a week away at the next tour stop. For a rookie like Libby Smith ’02, however, a missed putt could mean the difference between playing professionally one week and looking for a new job the next.
